Introducing Pixpro Petrel:

The Ultimate Optical Navigation Device for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Manned Aviation

Unlock the true potential of your aerial missions with Pixpro Petrel, the cutting-edge optical navigation device developed by Pixpro! Designed to revolutionize the way UAVs operate in GNSS denied areas, Pixpro Petrel offers unparalleled accuracy, reliability, and navigation redundancy for both unmanned and manned aviation. Jammed or spoofed GPS will not stop your mission ever again!

Unmatched Precision over Long Distances

At the heart of Pixpro Petrel lies our advanced Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology. By leveraging a simple photo camera and sophisticated algorithms, this device creates a real-time 3D map of the environment, allowing UAVs to navigate with exceptional precision and accuracy over vast distances. Intelligent dead reckoning enables precise localization and mapping capabilities even in the most demanding scenarios. Our latest version of Pixpro Petrel can easily and accurately navigate aircraft over tens of kilometers of compromised GNSS area, so whether you are conducting critical surveillance operations, mapping missions, or inspections, Pixpro Petrel ensures that you achieve reliable results, no matter how far your UAV needs to travel.

Optical vs Inertial Navigation and Signal Amplification

GNSS (Global navigation satellite system) at the moment has four major players: GPS (Global positioning system), operated by the USA; GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System), operated by Russia; EU's Galileo; China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. All of them use radio frequency based technology to operate, and as such, have well-known weaknesses, which can cause problems in certain environments, and as well are abused by drone jamming equipment - GPS jam and spoof is the number one weapon in anti-drone warfare. At the moment, there are already a few options available if one wants to operate UAV in a GNSS-compromised area. First and foremost - the Inertial Navigation System (INS) comes as standard equipment of UAVs or even part of the Autopilot unit. INS is crucial for aircraft stability and fills in gaps between GNSS acquisitions. Like almost all non-GPS navigation systems, inertial navigation is prone to the “stacking error“ problem and gives increasingly higher errors over any longer distance. Also, INS cannot calculate wind drift factor, which in higher altitudes may easily reach a few hundred meters over a kilometer traveled. Another option is signal filtering and amplification. It is quite a mature technology, and some excellent products in the market are made by Chelton, Tualcom, Novatel, and BAE, to name a few. These anti-jammers work well in full-scale aircraft and large UAVs but are unsuitable for lighter or long-distance aircraft due to size and massive power consumption. Depending on the version, Pixpro Petrel can be as light as 150 grams and use less than 2W of power during operation. Also, due to reliance on visual information only, Pixpro Petrel-equipped aircraft can fully function in 100% radio silence mode, i.e., be utterly immune to GPS jamming attempts, telemetry jamming, or hijacking. Also, due to UART and DroneCAN connections, it is very versatile compatibility-wise.

Inertial Navigation Signal Amplification Pixpro Petrel
System Weight Negligible+ 1000+ g 150-250 g
Power Requirement Same as Autopilot 5-12 V 5 V
Power Consumption Negligible 6-30 W 2-5 W
Precision Good for short distances, very inaccurate over long distances Regular GNSS accuracy Below 5 m error over 1000 m traveled
Application Must have in every aircraft. Very good for interim positioning Large UAVs and Regular Aircraft Medium and small UAVs
Jamming Resilience Very high, but prone to other factors High, but not absolute Unjammable by means of any Radio Interference

Compatibility

Pixpro Petrel is fully compatible with the most popular Autopilot units. We have tested it with Pixhawk 4, Pixhawk 6, and CUAV X7+. It should also work well with other MAVlink or Canbus-compatible units. Software-wise, Pixpro Petrel works very well with ArduPilot Mission Planner - it does not require additional setup, but additional pilot training in planning flawless missions is highly recommended. Options like ArduPilot Surface Tracking and similar also seem to work quite flawlessly. We will continue updating the tested autopilot systems list. Please feel free to contact us directly for more up-to-date information if you have specific needs or a more specialized system.

Reliable Redundancy for Mission Success

We at Pixpro understand the critical importance of redundancy in aerial missions. Pixpro Petrel provides additional navigation and nearly 100% GPS Anti-jam and GPS Anti-spoof capability to your UAVs, ensuring mission continuity despite equipment failure or signal loss. Industry-standard protocols allow us to connect Pixpro Petrel to almost any type of autopilot.

Not Just for UAVs, but for Manned Aviation Too

While Pixpro Petrel was developed with UAVs in mind, its capabilities also extend to manned aviation. Pilots can now benefit from the same advanced optical navigation technology to enhance their situational awareness, particularly in GNSS-denied or compromised areas. Pixpro Petrel empowers pilots with an extra layer of navigation redundancy, making it an indispensable tool for aviation professionals seeking reliability and safety.
